March 19 (Reuters) - Monsanto Co, the world’s biggest seed company, posted its worst quarterly profit in at least a decade as rising costs and the sluggish global economy held back demand for its key products.
Monsanto’s third-quarter net income plunged to $365 million, or $2.02 per share, from $1.2 billion, or $6.83 per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell to $3.65 billion from $3.84 billion.
Net sales declined for the third straight quarter, and fell further as Monsanto sold off some companies and a plant in Puerto Rico.
“These results demonstrate that, despite the challenging environment and despite our continuing efforts to right-size the organization and reduce overall costs, we’re delivering on our business plan,” Chief Executive Hugh Grant said on a conference call with analysts.
