The General Form of Reynolds Equation - MIT OpenCourseWare

jodywiltjer614883

In 1886, Professor Osborne Reynolds published a remarkably insightful paper that gave birth to the theory of lubrication (Reynolds 1886). The primary impetus behind this work was to formulate the governing equation that describes the pressure in a fluid-film lubricated bearing, with special reference to a series of reports on friction experiments by Beauchamp Tower (1883, 1885). In its original form, the Reynolds equation was derived based on the key assumptions of (a) Newtonian fluid, (b) negligible inertia and body forces, (c) negligible pressure gradient across the film thickness (d) laminar flow, and (e) negligible curvature effects. Some of these assumptions (e.g., Newtonian fluid, laminar restriction) have been relaxed by extending the derivation to a more generalized form reviewed here. Solution of the equation enables one to determine the...

These cover the different kinds of numerical tools used to solve the Grad-Shafranov equation. Fixed and free boundary solvers are discussed. Demonstrations are using FreeGS, a code in python which is publicly available. 2ff7e9595c
